Causes of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis

Polymyositis is a muscle disease that falls under the category of inflammatory myopathies. These diseases are defined by chronic inflammation in the muscles accompanied by weakness. Polymyositis specifically affects skeletal muscles, which are responsible for movement, on both sides of the body. The disease can be associated with a skin rash which would be diagnosed as dermatomyositis.

Symptoms of Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis

Symptoms of polymyositis can vary, but typically include muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness of the muscles that control movement. Dermatomyositis causes a red or purple rash on sun-exposed skin and eyelids, calcium deposits under the skin, muscle weakness, and trouble talking or swallowing.

Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis Treatment

Treatment for polymyositis typically includes medications to reduce inflammation and improve muscle strength, physical and occupational therapy, and lifestyle changes. With proper management, people with polymyositis can often live full and active lives. Symptomatic treatment is available for dermatomyositis, though no cure has been found yet. Treatment works to reduce these symptoms but cannot get rid of them entirely.
